This is a really cool space! Held in the Großer Saal, the main concert hall of the Musikhochschule Lübeck, located in the school’s complex of historic merchant houses along the Obertrave, part of Lübeck’s UNESCO World Heritage site. The hall is housed in a corner building added to the ensemble around 1990. Its architecture is the work of Peter Rix, and its color design was carried out by Fritz Fuchs (1937–2018), a German-Swedish colorist known for applying Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophical theories of color to architecture. Fuchs, who worked from Järna in Sweden, completed roughly 250 projects over about four decades, many of them Waldorf schools and other anthroposophical buildings. His characteristic technique—a translucent lazure glazing on the wall surfaces—is used in the Lübeck hall. The Musikhochschule is the only music academy in Schleswig-Holstein and one of the region’s largest concert organizers.
